What to expect

All the information you need to know about the surf on offer in our area

Location

Situated about 56km south of Durban city, and located right in front of Scottburgh Point, Makulu Surf House is central to around 20 world class surf spots within a 35km radius. But the most consistent and best waves are mostly right in front of the house. Just a 2 minute walk and you’re jumping into the surf!

Surf Spots

We have a number of surf spots close to home, suitable for anyone from beginner to advanced. From gentle beach breaks to reeling point breaks with a secret slab also in the mix. With local knowledge you’ll have your best chance of scoring uncrowded perfection.

Guides & Transport

At Makulu Surf House we provide an in-house surf guide as well as transport to all the best surf spots. There’s no need for car hire, getting lost looking for surf, and wasting valuable time and money. When the surf is on, we’ll make sure you’re paddling into a bomb instead of driving through traffic

Summer (Dec - Feb)

December to February is generally our summer surf season. A mix of NE and SW trade winds push fun surf along our point breaks and beach breaks, and can occasionally provide large NE cyclone swells which light up Durban piers like a Xmas tree! If you’re keen to chase a swell into Mozambique, we know the best places to go!

Autumn (Mar - May)

Autumn has proven to be some of the best months for surf, as the winter draws closer, the stronger onshore breezes start to back off and the offshores start slowly drifting in, offering clean glassy days with subtle hints of winter swells on the horizon. Weather is generally still very warm with temps slowly starting to lower themselves in the evenings.

Winter (June - Aug)

Winter, June to August, is undoubtedly our favorite time of year. Large SW swells with strong offshore winds produce some of the most perfect blue barrels you’ll find on the planet! When the sand is right, every point lights up and the ocean comes alive!! Our winters are what dreams are made of. This is our best time of the year without a doubt!

Spring (Sept - Nov)

Spring has been our hot and cold months, sometimes winter stretches through to the end of September and by November we start getting stronger onshore winds more frequently. These months can still provide some of the best surf which we often refer to as the best “Late Winters”

Ocean Temperatures

Thanks to the warm Agulhas Current, the sea around Scottburgh stays comfortable year-round — averaging 25–27 °C in summer, cooling to about 20–22 °C in winter, and ranging between 21–25 °C during spring and autumn, making it ideal for surfing all year round.

Wetsuits

A 3/2mm long John during winter will suffice, Goose enjoys a 2mm short arm long leg  for most of the years conditions at home. If you’re planning a trip to JBay or Cape Town, you’ll need a 4/3mm at least… and of course board shorts during summer!

Surfboards

Because our coastline provides almost everything from overhead heaving barrels to soft and gentle beach breaks, the ultimate quiver would include a groveler, a standard all-rounder and a step-up. We have a special offer when it comes to boards, get in touch to find out more!
